Boston Ivy has glossy green leaves that turn an eye-popping array of red shades in the fall that includes scarlet, crimson, burgundy, and maroon. It is very fast growing, and looks just amazing climbing up buildings or trailing over rock walls. Ivy makes an excellent ground cover in the shade or the sun and will keep weeds at bay which is always a good thing! It is in flower from July to August, and the seeds ripen from October to November.

The ivy that adorns the outfield walls at Wrigley Field in Chicago is primarily common Boston ivy, a clinging woody vine of the grape family. Native to eastern Asia, this import is the ivy that covers the walls of many colleges. But on the walls of one of baseball’s most beloved ballparks, the ivy is something apart from all the other ivy covered walls… in that it helps define a team, a neighborhood and a city. The ivy reminds Cubs fans – and baseball fanatics everywhere – of the timeless beauty of the game. Wrigley Field went through a renovation primarily to the bleachers in 1937, but that is also when the ivy was added to the outfield walls at Wrigley. The ivy was added primarily to make the stadium look better which it certainly does, but also an attempt to cushion the outfield wall made out of brick. The wall is still to this day not one that you want to crash into unless you aren't that concerned for your health.
