Game Scores: Team Progress Report

Posted on Sep 28th 2018

As we approach the end of the 2018 regular season, you might find yourself falling behind on some of the key aspects of your favorite team. Before you start searching for "Chicago Cubs news", however, slow down. At Sports World Chicago, we want to ensure that you know everything about your team, no matter what has gotten in the way of your ability to keep track of the Chicago Cubs scores and standings.

Without further ado, here is an update concerning the goings on with your team as they prepare for the playoffs.

Have the Cubs Clinched Yet?

As of September 26th, the Cubs have officially clinched a playoff berth with a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the division isn't won yet. This is because the Brewers and Cardinals, the two teams chasing the Cubs in the division have been red hot lately. The Brewers are clinging just behind the Cubs in the division and are the only threat remaining to the Cubs winning yet another division title going into the last series of the season.

The end of the season looks to be tense for the Cubs in the standings as well. The Brewers go to Detroit to play the Tigers, who are one of the weaker teams in the league. The Cubs play division rivals the Cardinals, who are still fighting the Rockies for the final wild-card playoff berth. Needless to say, it's going to take a bit of luck for the Cubs to hold onto their division lead and home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

What Do the Playoff Scenarios Look Like?

It's looking like the Cubs will either be the 1-seed in the first playoff round or the team hosting a wild card game, so the first game would likely be at Wrigley either way. That's when things get more complicated. If the Cubs hold onto their lead, they'll host the winner of the wild-card game between the Brewers and either the Cardinals or the Rockies. If the Brewers end up taking the Central division title, the Cubs will play the Rockies or Cardinals, and if they win, go onto play the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The Current State of the Team

The Chicago Cubs recent scores and struggles have primarily been due to a few significant absences in key parts of the team. Kris Bryant hasn't been able to stay healthy for the entire year, and he's injured once again as we approach playoff time. Brandon Morrow, the team's closer, has been shut down for the year. Luckily, Anthony Rizzo has gotten hot at the right time and Javy Baez is having an MVP-caliber year, so with Cole Hamels pitching well since he came to Chicago a few months ago, the team looks set to at least challenge for a second World Series in 3 years.
